Phil Marfleet lectures in Third World Studies and is co-ordinator of UEL's MA in Refugee Studies. His research interests include globalisation and the political economy of international migration, trade, aid and unequal exchange, issues in development education, eurocentrism and 'third worldism'. Nakba is an arabic word which means catastrophe. An interesting take on this word Nakba is to 'Google' it and see how it is defined. In the context of all of the material you will find here, all of the claims made by the speakers, all of the political positions adopted in relation to Zionism and the State of Israel, you may not be surprised to find that when 'Googling' an arabic word the first page is covered by Israeli interpretations of that word, its meaning and its validity. Further, this page also reveals Israeli calls to 'strike the word Nakba from the lexicon'. When a state calls for the extinguishing of a word from the lexicon it has to be cause for concern. When a state calls for the extinguishing of a word from the lexicon that belongs to a people it is conflict with, it has to be cause for investigation. And in the twentyfirst century, in the time of the electronic information age, when one group seeks to dominate a search engine result with not only the refutation of a word from another culture but a call for that word to be extinguished, then freedom of speech, freedom of thought and freedom of expression are not simply challenged but deliberately and actively undermined.
