The Life in the UK Test is a test set by the Government that people have to take (depending on their level of English) in order to become a British citizen. This implies that the topics and questions posed in the test establish knowledge common to all British citizens.
The resulting work came from setting up a Life in the UK Test center within the University and inviting people to participant in this test. The questions comprised of a selection from the citizenship test practice book (which are the same as the ones used in the Life in the UK Test set by the Government). The participants answers were recorded on camera, which formed the basis of the video piece entitled The Life in the UK Test.
How do you establish questions that are common to all British citizens?
What are common notions of citizenship?
