HumanRightsTV

Indigenous Australia

The whole of Human Rights TV is a thank you to Sharon Kinchela, Violet Spicer, Rodney Boschman and Jennifer Wright without whom it would not have been possible.

The whole team who have built the site would also like it to stand as a symbol of reconciliation as inspired by the Indigenous people of Australia.

Putting It All Together

"Putting it all together". A film about the story of Rodbey Boshman told by himself in his own words. The Journey Home March - Brisbane 05 02 1998
This video series contains the complete record of the Journey Home march in 1998. The march is actually the single most important event in the history of HumanRights TV. As you will see here, this march took place over the course of a day. The streets of Brisbane between Boundary Park and City Hall were blocked off, traffic stopped and the marchers had the freedom of the roads. The Lord Mayor of one of the five major cities of Australia gave the keys of the city to the indigenous elders, which I believe was the first time a major city had done this, as an act of reconciliation. When I looked in the newspapers or watched the television the next day I found no reference to this march. An act of reconciliation, the history of Brisbane and the history of the indigenous people of Queensland, it was like it simply hadn't happened. Perhaps I missed something but I felt that whatever the case the history of the indigenous people of Queensland could no longer pass unnoticed in the wider world. I promised my indigenous friends that I wouldn't be just another person who came to do research, took it away and lived happily ever after, I promised I would give something back. HumanRights TV is the fulfillment of that promise. HumanRights TV is a free global distribution service for all indigenous peoples and all who have suffered human rights abuse. The Tent.
The march began at Musgrave Park. This is the park where the boundary was marked, the boundary beyond which all black people had to be before dark, out and away from the whitefella in the city. The symbolism of this start made the moment very poignant and as a white man the very name brought a sense of personal shame. This was the first time I started recording events on a camcorder and would ask your tolerance of the fact that i made every mistake possible to make. Over the years I have learnt, keep filming, tape is cheap and lost history is expensive. Jack Adams, London 2009

Marching to City Hall
The marchers walked the streets of Brisbane, from Musgrave Park to City Hall, 10 years before Kevin Rudd apologises, they marched to meet Jim Soorely who would give them the keys of the city.
