Video Content As commissioner on the Independent Asylum Commission has heard shocking and heart rending testimony from asylum seekers throught UK. Shameful to hear that people who have fled to this country for safety are forced into destitution, sleeping on the streets, begging and illegal working . At least a quarter of a million people who have been denied leave to remain in UK are living without benefits or any means of earning a living. IAC believes it is unacceptable to use destitution as a means to force people to return to their country. 61 per cent of British public believe nobody should be destitute regardless of race or immigration status. Difference between Zimbawean asylum seekers in this country and people in Zimbabwe is that UK can do something. IAC believes that Zimbabweans who are a special case as they cannot return to their country, should be allowed to work if they have been in the UK for more than 6 months. Government must take action now.
